- CDA & YDM CONVENTION
- KENNEDY
2000
The
annual CDM/YDM Convention will be taking place on April 9, 2000,
at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. Currently,
the two organizations are working in conjunction to schedule the
events that will take place and are confirming speakers to make
this one of the most exciting and entertaining conventions to date.
As the arrangements are finalized, we will be contacting all chapter
leaders to ensure that all members of our organization have the
opportunity to participate. The following is a brief overview of
our ongoing efforts:
WORKSHOPS
We
will be sponsoring 6-8 workshops in two sessions, with each session
lasting approximately 45 minutes long. Panelists and facilitators
are currently being enlisted to provide their expertise on today's
most controversial issues.
Proposed
topics include:
1.
What is the future of the Democratic Party?
2.
Running for Elected Office
3. Volunteering/Staffing a Political Campaign
4. Politics of A Non-Profit Organization
5. Organizing A College Campus
6. Campaign Finance Reform/Fundraising
7. Technology
8. Media
9. Running For Elected Office
SPEAKERS
To
provide our membership with insight into the inner workings of federal
and state government and give a personal view of their visions of
the future for the Democratic Party, we will be inviting several
individuals to deliver addresses to attendees between workshop sessions.
Among the many well-known guests invited to address to convention
is Steve Grossman, former Chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
CHARTER AMMENDMENTS
The
convention will serve as the official forum by which CDM will enact
amendments to our charter. Several important issues are scheduled
for discussion and consideration by the convention body and will
face debate. The results of this initiative will be crucial in the
expansion of CDM and will determine the direction into which the
organization will proceed.
ELECTIONS
Our
annual election of executive board members will be held at the end
of convention day activities. All CDM chapter members will be counted
upon to elect ambitious, determined, focused individuals to lead
the organization into the next year.
PRE-CONVENTION
PARTY
YDM
will host a Pre-Convention Party in conjunction with young state
legislators to provide an opportunity to meet fellow College Democrats
members in a more casual environment and allow everyone to have
a good time - the way it should be for all Democrats. Arrangements
for this event will be announced soon.
HOUSING/TRANSPORTATION
Housing
is currently being offered for College Democrats members who attend
schools outside of the immediate Boston metropolitan area. The hosting
school of the convention is currently considering all arrangements.
In addition to housing, a charter bus is being proposed by YDM to
bring members on the day of the convention from the U-Mass Amherst
area to Harvard to encourage participation and eliminate transportation
concerns for schools outside of the range of the Commuter Rail.
If you need housing or busing to Harvard for members of your chapter,
please contact Michael Christofides at machris@bu.edu.
For
all questions concerning the CDM/YDM Convention, or to volunteer,
please contact Michael Christofides, Secretary of CDM, at machris@bu.edu.

Since
his election to the Senate in 1964 to complete his brother's term,
Senator Edward M. Kennedy has been a leader on issues important
to middle class Americans. He has taken great strides to improve
our country's education system, offer wide-reaching health care
initiatives to those forgotten by traditional HMO programs, and
to provide workers across the country with tougher safety standards
and higher wages. Ted Kennedy has, through his solid and dependable
leadership on the front lines, stood up to the special interests
to fight for those who need help the most. As the senior Democrat
on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, he continues
to champion the causes that directly impact his constituents, both
in Massachusetts and nationwide.
Senator
Kennedy's record has shown that he is dedicated to providing quality
health care for all. Through his resounding efforts, he has managed
to eliminate hundreds of insurance abuses that resulted in a loss
of coverage for thousands of Americans a year. The 1996 Kassebaum-Kennedy
Bill guaranteed health care coverage to individuals who lose their
jobs or are in the process of changing jobs to ensure that working
families continue to receive adequate medical care even in hard
times. The 1997 Children's Health Insurance Plan, an initiative
he introduced with Senator Orrin Hatch, gives every child a healthy
start in life. Today, he continues the struggle for health care
reform through his efforts to see a Patient's Bill of Rights passed
in the Senate and to provide Medicare coverage to senior citizens
for prescription drugs.
Ted
Kennedy's efforts to improve the quality of education in our nation's
schools are unprecedented in the Senate. His support of the Head
Start program has ensured that young children enter school ready
to learn. He has resolved to work towards wide-reaching student
aid initiatives to make college accessible and affordable for all
students. He has been a major proponent of wiring schools to the
Internet. As a result of his statewide efforts, 100% of schools
in Massachusetts are currently connected to the Internet. This project
was accomplished through the assistance of 20,000 volunteers and
the donation of over $35 million in products and services.
In
addition, Senator Kennedy has dealt with the issues that directly
impact working families. Among the highlights of his 38-year record
are: his continuing fight to raise the minimum wage, his proposals
to increase safety in the workplace, his initiatives to provide
better job training and opportunities, his programs helping individuals
with disabilities to lead productive and successful lives, his efforts
to strengthen civil rights laws, and his strong resolve to protect
Social Security and Medicare for senior citizens.
To
continue the pursuit of his vision for reform in the Senate, however,
Senator Kennedy needs your support. The Kennedy campaign is underway
and looking for energetic volunteers to ensure his unprecedented
leadership will continue. A massive signature collection drive is
currently gathering the 10,000 signatures the Senator will need
to qualify for the ballot. Future activities will include visibilities,
phone banking, and community outreach. If you want to get involved
in the campaign, please contact Marty Walsh, Field Director of the
Kennedy 2000 campaign, by e-mail at mwalsh@massdems.org,
by phone at (617) 742-6598, or go to the official Kennedy
2000 campaign website at www.kennedy2000.com
and fill in the participation form.
